Pacquiao Defeats Bradley: Is This His Farewell Victory?

Saturday, April 9, saw Pacquiao [58-6-2] beat Bradley [33-2-1] at the MGM Grand in front of an over 14,000 crowd with two knockouts in the seventh and ninth rounds. These two’s fight trilogy came to a close via unanimous decision, a resounding victory to the Pacman with scores 116-110 from all three judges of that night’s event.

But what dampened the night’s victory for the Filipino champ’s fans was his announcement beforehand that he was leaving the boxing world after the Saturday bout. His reasons — he wants to devout more time to his family as well as his desire to serve his country. Pacquiao is running for a senate seat and with the Philippine elections set for next month, his leaving the sports is timely.

Was last Saturday’s win his farewell victory?

Timothy Bradley was the first to enter the ring wearing a white hood with a purple hood. Manny Pacquiao came in next wearing his country’s colors – blue, white and red – all the while smiling as Katy Perry’s Roar played in  the background.

While Bradley did fight amazingly in the bout especially in Rounds 2 and 8 [where he cornered the People’s Champ and forced him to cover himself up], Pacquiao came out as the aggressor even showing glimpses of his old fighting self many times throughout the fight. He managed to down Bradley twice in the 12-round bout, in the 7th [though Bradley didn’t look shaken by his fall in this round] and the 9th rounds. By the 10th, Bradley already showed signs of strain.

In the last round, Bradley recovered and advanced aggressively. However, his zeal came in too late. Pacquiao remained standing, a strong indicator that he already bagged the bout even before the judges’ decision was announced.

Naturally, with the power Pacquiao showed in his fight against Bradley, the first question that greeted him post-fight was would he still continue on with his retirement after the night’s victory? Wouldn’t his win make him reconsider walking away from the boxing world?

However, Pacquiao remained steadfast with his decision.

“Like I said, sir, I already made a commitment to my family that after this fight I am going to go back home and spend more time with them. And I [am] going to retire and serve the people of the Philippines. That is my focus,” he said.

Nevertheless, there’s a ray of hope for Pacquiao fans.

“My heart is 50/50. Boxing is a really hard sport, very difficult. Like I said, I might enjoy retired life. It’s hard to say because I’m not there yet. But right now my decision is to retire,” he stated after laughing when another reporter asked him about his retirement for the third time.

And when asked if he would consider going back inside the ring should Floyd Mayweather Jr. agree to a second boxing match with him, Pacquiao gave an open-ended answer.

So, to answer the question: was the Saturday bout Pacquiao’s farewell victory? Well, the possibilities are endless. Let’s just not put a dot to that.

Broncos Win Super Bowl 50!

A lot of Broncos fans, and probably the players as well, are still celebrating their win. Cam Newton, which was named the league’s Most Valuable Player, sadly wasn’t so invincible when the entire Denver Broncos beat him in the biggest game of all, the Super Bowl! Thumbs up to Broncos’ defense against Carolina Panthers which ended with a 24-10 score!

According to Yahoo!, “It was the Broncos’ defense, not the Peyton Manning offense that was most responsible for Denver’s points. A Miller sack and strip of Newton in the first quarter was recovered in the end zone by Jackson to give Denver a 10-0 lead and set the tone that this was a different level than Carolina had seen. The game was capped by another Miller strip of Newton that set the Broncos up on Carolina’s 4-yard line. C.J. Anderson scored a few plays later to put it out of reach. Newton was sacked six times, tossed around like rag doll.”

Here are the highlights of the game:

Sports Update: “How Patient Will the Broncos be with Peyton Manning?”

The big question is, how patient will the Broncos be with Peyton Manning?

ESPN currently published in their blog about this and we’re hoping Manning would be well enough to play in the game. One of the problems most athletes face are the injuries they get during practice or while in a game. Every single player is prone to getting injured and when it happens to a star player like Peyton Manning, people can’t help but be concerned about it as it can affect the whole team. But we are happy to hear about Manning and his teammates being positive about his health.

According to the blog, “Manning has said he has complete confidence he is healthy enough to play against the Steelers, and many of Manning’s teammates say they believe he is healthier right now than he was even in September. But how long would Kubiak wait in a playoff game to make a move if things don’t go as well as they hope?

“I don’t know,” Kubiak said. “I don’t think that way. I’m going in and we’re positive here with everybody that we have going to play. It takes great effort to win in the National Football League, period, but everything gets ramped up in the playoffs. Like I said, it’ll take a great team effort. It won’t be about one player for us if we’re going to be successful in this second season. We’re going to play a great team one way or another. We’re all going to have to play well.”

Manning, who played 29 snaps in relief of Osweiler against San Diego, has said his foot had bothered him for some time, even before he suffered the tear in the plantar fascia in the Broncos’ Nov. 8 loss in Indianapolis. He has also said that doctors have told him his foot won’t completely heal until the coming offseason.

“I’m just looking forward to being able to contribute,” Manning said. “I came out [of Sunday’s game] fine, couple days off helped everybody I’m sure … no issues coming out of the game.”

We’re hoping for the best and wish the Broncos good luck in the coming game!

Sports: 5 Biggest Upsets 2015 Edition

Hello, 2016!

For sure, those involved in them need a bit of time – even some part of 2016 – to move on from their “fall”.

Holm-Rousey Knockout in UFC 193

Ronda Rousey was a force to reckon with in the MMA ring until Holly Holm came along. In their “Rowdy” Ronda’s undefeated streak inside the octagon during their November 2015 fight – that had the unsuspecting audience in uproar – when the “Preacher’s Daughter” knocked her out 59 seconds into the second round with a kick on the head. Holm took the Bantamweight title from Rousey that night.

But the 28-year-old former Olympian vowed that after taking a short hiatus, she will be back and many sports enthusiasts know she will do so with a vengeance. A possible rematch between these two great women fighters is looming in the near future.

The 10 Biggest Athletes of 2015

Let’s check out last year’s 10 biggest athletes — the ones that roared and stood up above the rest, not just in terms of being money makers but in other aspects as well.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. [Boxing]

Mayweather’s on the top of this list not just because he was Forbes’ Top Athlete for 2015 when it came to money making but also because his “mega bout” with Manny Pacquiao broke records when it came to pay-per-views and ticket sales. Additionally, he retired from boxing undefeated with a 49-0 record.

But then, sports experts still believe that with the right deal, the “Money Maker” will return to the ring for his 50th victory or his first loss via knockout. All we can do right now is wait and see.

Jose Aldo from Brazil, who has won 18 straight fights, fought with Conor McGregor from Ireland, who has also won 14 straight fights, last Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

What happened in the fight clearly caught a lot of us in shock. Only 13 seconds in and McGregor knocks Aldo out with his very first punch. Round 1 and it was done.

According to MMAfighting, “In the aftermath of the fight, McGregor is classy in victory, acknowledging Aldo has been a dominant champion and deserved for the fight to go longer. He also noted, however, that his belief that timing beats speed. McGregor argues even if the fight had gone long, Aldo would’ve been finished eventually. White added, “Ronda Rousey has gone undefeated, taken the sport to another level and was beating the best women in the world in fourteen seconds or thirty seconds, so she deserves a rematch. Holly agrees she deserves a rematch, and we’ll figure it out.” Excerpt from Yahoo!
